I am getting my raised beds ready for some fall gardening. Since this is my first year with these beds, I have some work to do still in preparation of the soil. I did not go out and buy expensive, high end top soil to fill these beds but instead used a combination of yard leaves, grass clippings, pine bark mulch, cheap top soil and horse manure. I layered using cardboard at the bottom, then leaves and grass, soil and cardboard and repeat. Once I got closer to the top, I introduced the manure for more nutrients near the top. As all these layers compost, it should be some pretty solid soil in the years to come.
